no FPS report from 'glxgears' ?

when I run glxgears, I never get an FPS printout, it just returns me to the shell command-line. Am I doing something wrong? I've tried ESC'ing out of it, I've tried clicking the 'x' to close the window, etc. Is there a command-line option I need to use?

    glxgears -printfps
    (or glxgears -iacknowledgethatthistoolisnotabenchmark )

    Thank you!

HOW was I supposed to know this?? I've been searching these forums, and google, for "glxgears" and "glxgears benchmark" without ever turning-up this option. (Yes, I realize it's not a valid apple-to-oranges benchmark but it at least gives you a baseline, especially on the same hw)
